Linear and Non-linear E-Learnings

The workhorse of the digital training world

The e-learning category spans a wide variety of potential online training tools. Most of us are familiar with the linear e-learning format which, at its worst is little more than a powerpoint presentation with a “next” button, but at its best can provide the learner with a well designed blend of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning opportunities that move along a single “rail” in order to ensure proper chaining and chunking of relevant information. A clear advantage of linear e-learning is that its inflexible design structure allows the designer to ensure that new information is properly spaced out between practice opportunities and knowledge checks, and that new information is added at a pace that does not push the learner into cognitive overload.

However, an e-learning can also be non-linear, using integrated or menu based navigation schemes that allow the learner to tailor the pace and order of learning to their own preference. This style of e-learning provides them with the option to skip between or revisit chapters as they see fit to ensure that the information they need is covered comprehensively. Non-linear e-learnings benefit from added flexibility, which makes them ideal for re-use as reference libraries and spaced repetition tools such as lesson follow-ups. They can come in many forms, including but not limited to certain types of training games, virtual learning environments, and open ended simulations.
